Making a passive income online is the best way earn money on autopilot from anywhere in the world. You can enjoy a sunny beach with cocktails, ramble in the mountains, do charity work, be with your children, the options are endless. A passive online income can support the life of your dreams. But how do you start building a passive income online? Is it possible AT ALL to make a passive online income?

Let’s clear the air first,

What is a ‘passive income’?

According to Investopedia, the term ‘passive income’ has been a relatively loosely used term in recent years. Colloquially, it’s been used to define money being earned regularly with little or no effort on the part of the person receiving it.

Alright, so passive income is what you earn with little or no effort…

There are few people who lucky enough to be born into a family that has passive income streams…But it does not mean that someone did not have to work very hard, over a lifetime or generations, to build up that massive portfolio that generates passive income.

If you are reading this post, I assume you were not born into a home like this…but no worries.

Thanks to the globalised world we live in at the end of the second decade of the 21^st century, there door is open for everyone to create ‘something’ (later on that…) that earns a passive income.

The 21st Century Kicked In the Door

Internet is the GREATEST opportunity, nothing like ever has existed before. You can reach millions of people, at the same time, all over the world from your laptop or even from your smartphone.

To be honest, not THAT many people can see the true potential of this as you’d think…Yes, millions of new blogs, new Youtube channels are created every day; but to be frank, millions will be abandoned within the next few months.

Very little people follow their dreams through until those dreams become reality…

Can You Make TRULY passive income online?

Well, the answer is no, and yes. It takes a lot of effort to create a passive income on the internet. It is not difficult, it is not hard, but it takes time and effort to build something brick by brick.

The biggest challenge is to remain patient.

It is often said, that you CANNOT FAIL in building your own passive income online, the only thing you can do is QUIT (or never start it).

So until it becomes a passive earning, it very much needs you active participation…

The great thing is, that the internet is full of training courses to help you achieve that.

You must work to achieve a passive income. You must work hard and learn a lot. But it can run on autopilot and still earn money for work that you have done years ago. Passively.Earn while you learn by building up a passive income. The simplest way is through online marketing and affiliate marketing. Thanks to the compound effect you will be paid work you do TODAY in the years to come.

Have I achieved true passive income already, I hear you ask? The honest answer is no, I have not. I have a full time 9-5 job, I have a 3-year old daughter and very little spare time. In that spare time I keep working on a number of websites that do earn a few hundred pounds (I live in the UK).

Is it passive? Yes.

Do I have to keep sit in an office to earn that money? No.

Is it truly passive? No, I must keep working until it becomes a full time income and beyond.

How Can You Make A Passive Income With No Money?

Another great thing about the internet that you can start small and take one small step after another to build up your passive income.

Yes, if you had a bit of money that you can invest, that would give a good head-start…But the biggest investment you must make is to INVEST IN YOURSELF.

Regardless of how much money you have to start your business, you must train yourself. Creating a passive income online needs a totally different mindset to what most people have (see above), and needs some technical skills that you will have to gain over time.

Earning a passive income online starts with creating something that is of value.

Whether its information, product or a service, it does not matter. The easiest – and especially if you have a limited budget – the cheapest way to create value is to

– Provide information (that is of great value to a group of people with a specific interest)

– Recommend services of others

– Recommend products of others

The maths is simple: if you can target a very specific NICHE, you will be able to earn money for your efforts in helping the meet the information / service / product they were looking for.

Why Affiliate Marketing is The Best to Make Passive Income

Well, firstly, you need little or no investment (in terms of money) to start it. You have no stock, no products. You have a website or websites, and you gain a lot of transferable knowledge (i.e. learn to make a website in 10 minutes).

It is easy to understand, it has proven that $1000s can be earned daily, and literally everyone can do it.

So how can a student make passive income online?

There are FREE affiliate marketing training courses all over the internet…
There are plenty of ways to create free (or very cheap) websites in a matter of minutes (with step-by-step guidance).
Creating a Youtube channel has never been easier
There are millions of products and services that you can review and recommend. The opportunities are endless.
It does not matter what language you speak (English comes quite handy, even though it is not my first language)
The amount you can earn with affiliate marketing has no cap. It all depends on the niche, the commission you get and number of people buying based on your recommendation.

Commission Rates

Typical commission rates are 25-30%, but you can often see commission rates up to 50%. It means that if someone buys a product or service that costs $100, you may earn $50 for referring that person.

Fixed Commission vs Recurring Commission

There services that offer the affiliate marketer recurring commission. It means that as long as the person you referred keeps paying the recurring fee for a product/service, you get the commission too. Sometimes there is a one-off referral fee AND recurring commission too (e.g. web-hosting affiliate programs).

Physical products vs Info products

The commission rates on info products are usually much lower, 3%-5%-10%. On the other hand, info-products are often overpriced thus less people buy them, or if they do, many of them return the product so you would lose the referral fee.

How much can you earn with affiliate marketing?

Here’s a little chart for those who love numbers. The click through rates and conversion rates are somewhat typical, however they do depend on the niche so they can slightly vary.

While it can take years to get 50,000 visitors a month, you can get 10,000 visitors to websites within a year. Note, that most people quit after a few months, because their blog only gets a few hundred visits a month. But this process takes time. Google must learn to trust your site – and if most people quit after a few months, why would Google bother driving search traffic to that website?

So visitor numbers only start increasing and reaching their potential after 35 weeks approximately…

But the nice thing is, once you have built your first website (and say, it took you about 2 months), what is stopping you from creating another one? And another one?

How Can You Start Building Your Passive Online Income?

You are reading this post, so you have taken the first, but most important step: you have realised that you want something different than the 9-5 treadmill. (apologies for generalising so much)

In our consumerist world 90% of people are consumers, and 1% are creators (and there are 9% contributors). If you look closer, the money is with the 1%. So, you must create too.

It is VERY scary at first. The beginning is the most difficult, because you don’t know where to start. I know, trust me I have been there not too long ago…

In fact, I still catch myself procrastinating, and coming up with excuses –

– I don’t know what to write about

– No-one is reading my posts anyway

– I’d rather watch Netflix…I work on my website tomorrow…etc. the list is endless.

But once I sit down in front my laptop, even if I don’t know what I was going to write about, I follow a simple process. And miraculously, 2-3 hours later I have a 2000-word long post…It may not be the final version, and I review it the next day, but even then…

The method works. Every. Time.

The Road to a Passive Income Starts Today

So if you don’t know where to start, start it by finding a step-by-step training. It is a must. You must break it down to digestible chunks, otherwise the whole topic is just too big to comprehend.

If’ you’d like to avoid scams and don’t want to be ripped off by some shady website, there are a few courses I recommend (have a look at Resources).

You can then decide if you prefer being on screen, and you start a youtube channel; or stay behind the keyboard and write content. Maybe a combination of two…

The key is that you must start it and keep doing it consistently; otherwise nothing will ever happen.

As a reminder: people cannot FAIL in affiliate marketing, people NEVER START OR QUIT.

Conclusion

Making a passive income online is not a get rich quick scheme. While anyone can start it with very little budget, it takes a lot of effort to learn how to create your income streams that will become passive over time.

The best way for a beginner to create passive income online is by affiliate marketing. You help people find answers to very specific questions, you may be able to offer products and/or services, and you earn a commission for doing that. Once you establish your online presence, this will happen on autopilot.

It also takes a lot of patience and adjusting your mindset to accept that you plant the seeds now and will harvest the fruits of your hard work years down the line.
